Both Microsoft and the giant Google announced Wednesday, Oct 22,2009 that they will start to integrate Twitter tweets and messages into their search results, moves that will propagate the short messages that is called tweets across the web and make them more visible to non-Twitter users.
The deals are a foray into indexing the real-time conversations occurring on the web. Twitter updates, unless locked by the user, are presumed to be public.
The main object of this deal between Google , Bing and Twitter is to serve real time incidents happening through out the world on their search results page. Twitter updates, now known mostly to the users of the microblogging service are the great source of data that contain the latest information about the current incidents.
“Real-time updates like those on Twitter have appeared not only as a way for people to communicate their thoughts and feelings, but also as an interesting source of data about what is happening right now in regard to a particular topic,” wrote Marissa Mayer,Vice President of Search Products and User Experience in a blog post.
Marissa also stated the effect of including twitter tweets on their search result and how will it work on Google official blog. In her word-
“Given this new type of information and its value to search, we are very excited to announce that we have reached an agreement with Twitter to include their updates in our search results. We believe that our search results and user experience will greatly benefit from the inclusion of this up-to-the-minute data, and we look forward to having a product that showcases how tweets can make search better in the coming months. That way, the next time you search for something that can be aided by a real-time observation, say, snow conditions at your favorite ski resort, you’ll find tweets from other users who are there and sharing the latest and greatest information.”
Microsoft Corp. has also picked up a new weapon in its Internet search duel with Google - full access to Twitter’s communications hotbed.
The partnership announced Wednesday represents a coup for Microsoft as it tries to spice up its Internet search engine, Bing, in its long-running attempts to lure traffic from Google. A test version of Bing’s Twitter feature debuted Wednesday.
Now every Twitter update will be indexed in real-time. But, unlike Twitter’s own search engine, Bing.com will assign value to tweets in a bid to surface those with the most informational value. Until now, Bing had indexed only certain tweets from celebrities or prominent journalists.
The indexing of Twitter and Facebook updates into search has long been expected. “We’ve thought Twitter’s real-time pulse should naturally feed into search results, just like results for news or shopping,” said Dema Zlotin, VP and co-founder of search-marketing firm Covario.
The question is whether this will drive faster adoption for Twitter, which has grown quickly in the U.S. but has been slowing down.
Twitter as a company , only brought in $4 million dollars last year. This is long how I thought Twitter would become profitable: it would become a real-time search engine of people’s trends, and a valuable one to marketers and companies.
For Twitter though, today marks significant validation of its business. Just two weeks ago, it was rumored that the company was working on search deals worth “several millions dollars,” and today, they delivered, by partnering with the two biggest players in the game. With a fresh $100 million in the bank and both Google and Microsoft implementing tweets in search, it looks like Twitter is in it for the long haul.
It could also mean Twitter’s first meaningful source of revenue, though neither side disclosed business details. Twitter CEO Evan Williams told the New York Times that “revenue was not the focus of the deals.”
Again, Marissa Meyer, Google’s vice president of search products and user experience, refused to disclose the financial terms of the partnerships, but should Twitter not be paid then we’re frankly back to square one in regards to where Twitter is finding its $4 million in revenue.
