A browser cookie is a small text file which contain little piece of information sent by a web server to be stored on user’s hard disk for future use. The data in the browser cookie is retrieved by the server whenever the browser reconnect to the website.
The piece of information are stored as name-value pairs which is not a program and can not do anything.
Browser cookies are commonly used to store user preference information, such as website options. The most security relevant use of browser cookies are used to store authentication data, like username and passwords. A website can retrieve only the data that it has stored on user’s computer. It cannot retrieve data from other’s cookie file.

There are also third party cookies & session cookies.
Session cookies are cookies which are not stored on the browser’s computer. Session cookies are deleted when the user closes the browser. Because session cookies are not saved between sessions, they are seen as less of a security risk than persistent cookies.
Third party cookies are from other website that advertise on the web site you are surfing.
Not all cookies are harmful but the third party cookies sent by the advertising sites track your movements on the net & could sell this information to their advertisers to help them decide what junk mail to send you.This dangerous cookies allow the advertising farms to getting the exact UELs of the web pages you look at.
You often need to type your name and email into forms, when registering at a site. Whenever you do it they collect your name & email address and store it in their database. This database is then sold to their advertisers. When you use one of the popular search engines, the queries you type are probably being logged and analyzed too.
If you look at your cookies file you may see the names of web sites that you have never heard of. They were probably put there by companies that resell advertising space from a large number of popular sites.
However, you can view and delete your browser’s permanent cookies from the text folder or file where they are saved.

How to delete cookies in Firefox 3.0
1. Select “Tools”
2. Select “Options”.
3. Select “Privacy”.
4. Click “Show cookies”.
5. Then hit on “Remove all Cookies”
6. Click OK.


How to delete cookies in Opera 9.0 & 10.0
1. Open the Tools menu.
2. Select Delete private data
3. Click the “Details” button
4. Select Delete cookies.
5. Click “Delete”.


How to delete cookies in Opera 8.x:
1. Open the Tools menu.
2. Select Preferences to open Dialog box.
3. Open the Advanced tab.
4. Select “Cookies”.
5. Click the “Manage Cookies” button.
6. Select one or more cookies you want to delete and click the “Delete” button.
How to delete cookies in Internet Explorer 8
1. Click “Safety” on the Command bar
2. Select “Delete Browsing History”
3. Select the option for cookies and click Delete
Alternatively, Internet Explorer 8’s new InPrivate browsing feature allows users to browse the internet without recording information from visited sites (including cookies). To use InPrivate mode:
1. Click “Safety” on the Command bar
2. Select “InPrivate Browsing”

How to delete cookies in Internet Explorer 7.0
1. Select “Tools”
2. Select “Internet Options”.
3. Open the “General” tab.
4. In “Browsing history” area click the “Delete” button.
5. In “Delete browsing history” window click “Delete cookies” button and then click “Yes”.
6. Click Close and then click OK.
How to delete cookies in Internet Explorer 6.x
1. Select “Tools”
2. Select “Internet Options”.
3. Open the “General” tab.
4. Click the “Delete cookies” button.
5 Click OK.
Note: In Internet Explorer even if you delete cookies
manually, cookies index.dat file stores Internet surfing
information. This file can’t be deleted manually as it is
used by Windows all the time.
How to delete cookies in Google Chrome
1. Click on the Tools menu and select Options
2. Click the “Under the Hood” tab and locate the “Security” section
3. In the “Cookie settings” section, click the “Show cookies” button.
4. Select “Remove all” to delete all cookies from the list (alternatively, you can remove all cookies created within a specific time period by selecting the “Clear browsing data” option in the Tools menu).
5. To delete a specific cookie, simply select the website
that set the cookie from the list and click on “Remove”.
6. Click on the Close button when you’ve finished.
